Technology everywhere!

Adelaide may be getting their own hi-tech bus but we’re already way ahead in Brisbane.

Of the four people sitting near me on my bus trip home one is checking Facebook, the second listening to their iPod, the third sending SMS, and the fourth chuckling while reading Cracked.com. At least I’m not tied to technology. :)

Supervision can save later grief

A warning to all Dads obsessed or chained to their computers. Always investigate immediately when it goes quiet, because they’ll be up to something mischievous!

“This is what I get for working on the computer and not paying attention”

I’m excited

About this… Ben and Jerry’s!

Bring it…to Brisbane! :)

Idiot…

I took Catherine to school this morning and after dropping her off walked down to the car with Alexandra. I was pressing the little button on the car remote and wondering why it wouldn’t unlock. It took me a few tries of the button to realise that I was pressing the “lock” button…not the “unlock”… [sigh]

Catherine was very sweet

I almost cried! Catherine sang her own made up lullaby to Alexandra at bed-time. She told me she has a beautiful voice because she can sing a lullaby.

Such a contrast to when they are bitterly and ferociously contesting a much coveted toy.

2009 is the last year to enjoy the Brisbane Ekka

We’re off to the Ekka this year ! Thanks to revenue being devasted by Queensland Health flu in 2007 plans to destroy revitalise the site are now in action. This is the last year you can experience the show in its pre-War glory.

What’s ahead is a 15 year predictable urban gentrification that will provide more suave but lifeless yuppie apartments and squat and sensible office blocks containing cubicle dwellers spending the day responding to emails and occasionally ducking out for a soy caramel frappichino. (I can say this, I’m one of them but I’m too cheap to buy coffee. And certainly don’t drink hipsters brews).

The RNA have helpfully published an FAQ, and as a community service I’ve provided translations to the answers to the burning questions of the future of the Ekka, as quoted below:

Q. Will the EkkA be impacted by the re-development?
A. The EkkA will operate effectively throughout the re-development programme and will be a better event on completion of the Project.

A. Yes.

Q. Will the EkkA land space be smaller?
A. What we’re determined to achieve is better efficiency of that space. There will be significant and positive changes to the EkkA and the RNA Showgrounds site. The history of the EkkA will be safeguarded and it will remain the leading agricultural show in Australia, where the county meets
the city.

A. Yes.

Q. Does the community have a say on the future of the site?

A. Yes – definitely. As custodians of the RNA Showgrounds, any changes to the site and the EkkA have to involve Queenslanders. We have established a free call hotline (1800 066 053) for people to provide feedback during working hours and our website www.rnashowgrounds.com.au will also allow people to lodge feedback. You can also email us at rnashowgrounds@rowland.com.au.

A. Yes – definitely. We’ll smile serenely.

Q. What level of influence can the community have on the development?

A. A variety of ongoing consultation activities are planned to allow the community, operators and stakeholders to provide feedback to the RNA and Lend Lease regarding the redevelopment. All feedback is encouraged and will be carefully considered.

A. Minimal, community feedback will only be considered (but handled carefully).

Vicks Vaporub bad for young children

A study study cautions against using Vicks Vaporub:

“I recommend never putting Vicks in, or under, the nose of anybody – adult or child,” the lead author, Dr Bruce Rubin from the department of pediatrics at Wake Forest University, North Carolina, said

He said cough and cold medicines and decongestants were not good for young children. He recommends salt water, warm drinks and chicken soup.

This is the response of the manufacturer:

Proctor & Gamble, the maker of Vicks, slammed the study, saying it contradicts previous studies and is based on limited data from tests on ferrets, of unknown relevance to humans.

Who to believe?
