Catherine’s first birthday

We had her birthday party and then we had her birthday :) Catherine turned 1 on the 23rd of March. We had a relaxing day and that night, a mini party (dessert) to celebrate with just a couple of friends. Catherine had a little bit of birthday cake – Woolworths sponge cake and I made some butter icing to go on it :) . One of my friends from work (which isn’t really work anymore seeing as I resigned, but you get the idea!) made tiramasu and brought it over together with her kids. Catherine had a great time playing with Jake and Alani.

I started the day by trying to kill some bedbugs. I then drove somewhere…Mummy’s not sure where I picked up this driving position from but it’s definitely not from her…DADDY!
I had a refreshing bath after lunch. Hmm, what’s this?
Ohhhh, CAKIE! Maybe there’s more under here?

We’re walking!

Catherine took her first step on the 4th of March and sporadically took one or two steps for a couple of weeks. On the 21st of March, she took five steps in a row and then two days later, 22 steps. Since then, she hasn’t looked back. That said, if there’s anywhere she wants to get to in a hurry, she’ll crawl there but we can see that she’s getting more confident with her walking. It won’t be long now before she starts running!

Catherine’s first birthday party

Catherine had her first birthday party on the 18th of March. We decided to have a barbeque dinner with 50 odd adults and about 8 or 9 kids. Needless to say, it was more a party for Mum and Dad :D I decided to make the cake myself and had been “practicing” baking it for about a month beforehand! The icing of it was an adventure as I had never done anything like it before. It didn’t turn out too badly! Enjoy some snapshots of the day!

The happy girl having breakfast. She’s ready to party!
But I want my cake! Here she is kicking up her heels!
Our lawn was mowed… Just a few cans of drink to satisfy the crowd.

The birthday cake.

Ministerial Forum

On Monday the 13th (boy my blogging is behind) I attended the Ministerial Regional Forum to demonstrate the software developed in partnership with LEAN (Logan and Beuadesert Emergency Accommodation Network) and RSPCA Qld for booking accommodation and services (such as counselling).

Rocking up.. (NOT me on the left or right!)
Shot of the forum participants..
.. another pic.
These events are not without perks!

Despite the yummy treats available, I didn’t get a chance to eat anything during afternoon tea because it was spent doing an demonstration of the product and explaining the features. All work and no eat for me!

You are a Squirt.

At any other time to be called a squirt would be deemed insulting and demeaning. But for those keen would-be swimmers at Aquatic Achievers it is a badge of achievement – awarded after successfully passing the orientation lesson. Catherine can count herself as a select member of the Squirt alumni – and now she has started weekly lessons on a Saturday morning.

(A badge of honour)

Jo and myself take it in turns to go in the pool with her, and Catherine is taught the basics such as kicking in the water (we manually move her legs), splashing, diving underwater, playing humpty-dumpty on the pool edge (sing humpty-dumpty sat on the wall etc .. then the inevitable fall).

It would have to be the most heavily chlorinated pool on the planet, for good reason. Statistically, if you put enough little kids in the one swimming pool there will be a strong chance of “contamination”. Those not trained in the fine art of bladder control are required to wear swim nappies though.

Never do nice things for anybody, ever

Been a really busy week at work, everyone has been working hard and at odd hours. Thursday night our US Shelter Buddy customers had a software upgrade, a developer was up until 5:30am or so because of some technical difficulties. I got to bed at 1:30am, getting through a backlog of emails and other work. Another developer was woken at 4am, because of other technical issues.

At Friday lunch I went to the local shopping centre to post invitations to Catherine’s first bithday party (coming up in a week’s time!). While I was there I popped into the local supermarket and spied some danishes and chocolate covered profiteroles (on special of course – my mother has taught me well).

Anyway I bought two containers of the danishes and a container of profiteroles for the rest of the nerds developers. When I returned to the office I gave a box of danishes to Andrew, then the container of profiteroles to Anthony .. which promptly spilt open on his lap, leaving chocolate stains on his clothes, and a scattering of profiteroles on the carpet.

If that was what my Friday was like, I am not looking forward to Monday!

Camping

Okay, we arrived in Brisbane early one morning from Indonesia and at lunchtime the next day, we left to go camping at Brooms Head Caravan Park. It was a nice drive down…I think I slept most of the way?

Scott packed our little Nissan Pulsar to the roof with all the stuff we brought down and poor little Catherine didn’t have much personal space at all…lucky she’s small.

Here are some other snapshots of our 6 days and 5 nights at the beach.

We had a great time and we’re definitely going to do the same this year! It was a shame it had to end as it was so relaxing and Scott HAD to take a holiday! :D

Rain rain come again!

It’s been bucketing down in the past week in Queensland and New South Wales, so much so there has been flooding and mudslides. It has been most unusual to have so much rain, almost a novelty!

Me leaving work – view of the EMU through the window.
This big toadstool popped up in the backyard.
